Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

What is it?

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), is a way of stimulating weak or paralysed muscles by stimulating the nerves and muscles directly with a small electrical current using electrodes placed on the skin. When FES is used to correct foot drop, it can help reduce trips and falls, and make walking faster and less effortful.

Who uses it?

It can be used to correct foot drop after a stroke and is sometimes used with additional muscle groups to aid walking commonly with multiple sclerosis sufferers. There are different devices on the market and we can advise on prices and what would be most suitable for you. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has declared FES as safe and effective treatment for foot drop.

How can I try it?

We can arrange an assessment to see if FES can help you. Should this be successful, you can hire a PACE FES device, before you decide on whether you wish to purchase one. As well as correcting foot drop PACE can be used in exercise mode for training and strengthening muscles in the arm and hand.

Do you already use PACE or ODFS ? If you need a review to have settings adjusted please call us.
